step 1: what you need to remove gel

Firstly you need the following to start the procedure:
  • Acetone-based nail polish remover
  • Cotton pads or cotton balls
  • Optional either aluminium foil or you can use a bowl
  • A nail file
  • Cuticle pusher
  • Optional: hand lotion

Gel nails have long been a popular DIY trick you can do at home, or in the salon. Removing gel nails is something you can easily do at home. It is more budget friendly, and sometimes better for your natural nails to gently remove them yourself. This is a step by step guide on how to carefully remove your gel nails at the comfort of your home.

STEP 2: Gently file nail

Secondly, start with gently filing the top layer of your gel on each finger. Remove some of the gel colour or the first gel layer. This will allow the acetone to dissolve the rest of the gel effectively.

STEP 3: Soak your gel nails

You can either soak the cotton balls in the acetone and wrap them in the aluminium foil. Then you wrap your nails for about 15-20 minutes. The gel should start to create air bubbles and lift up, making it easier to remove carefully with a cuticle pusher. The other approach is to put the acetone in a bowl and dip your fingers inside and let your fingers soak in the acetone for at least 10 minutes.

STEP 4: Slowly remove the gel on nail

Now, you can unwrap the foil or remove your fingers from the bowel soaked in acetone and gently push the gel off your nails using the cuticle pusher. If there is resistance, soak your nails or re-wrap them in foil and soak them for a bit longer.

STEP 5: Enjoy your gel free nails from home

Wash your hands in water and soap. I always add moisturiser as the last step because  acetone can be very drying for your hands. I usually give my nails a week or two of rest before i apply a fresh set of gel nails. If you want to see our hot girl guide on how to apply gel nails see the article here.
